Taipei, Feb. 13 (CNA) A fireworks display will take place Friday in outlying Kinmen County and in nearby Xiamen in China simultaneously to celebrate the Lunar New Year, the Kinmen County government said Tuesday.

Up to 2,234 fireworks will be set off from the waterfront near the Shanglin Temple in Kinmen's Lieyu Township, the county government said.

The county's Transportation and Tourism Bureau Director General Chen Mei-ling (陳美齡) said it is hoped that the event will send blessings and symbolize peace across the Taiwan Strait.

In order to increase the atmosphere of this year's event, the county has increased the number of activities and shows.

Performances will kick off at 7:05 p.m. Feb. 16, with drums, bands and lion dance performances, said Chen, adding that the fireworks are scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
