Hong Kong, Oct. 9 (CNA) China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) are in possession of an ultra-high frequency (UHF) radar system that has a detection range that covers all of the First Island Chain of the East Asian region, a Hong Kong-based military analyst said Monday.

Leung Kwok-leung (梁國樑) told CNA that the UHF phased array warning system that was debuted on China Central Television has a detection range of thousands of kilometers and can detect fast- travelling objects such as intercontinental ballistic missiles.

While the official debut of the Chinese-made radar system is recent, Leung claimed that the long-range radar has long been used in Inner Mongolia and in Jilin and Qinghai provinces.

The radar system has been dubbed as China's AN/FPS-115 PAVE PAWS, an elaborate radar detection system developed by the U.S. in 1980 to detect sea-launched ballistic missile attacks.
