ETFs have been popular among both institutional and retail investors because of their convenience, low investment cost and transparency. The structure of ETFs is also easy for investors to understand and allows them to spread their investment risks.
Since the launch of its first ETF in 2003, TWSE has made efforts to enhance regulations and improve market structures with the support from the regulators. As of the end of July this year, 21 ETFs were listed on TWSE, including domestic products issued by Taiwanese companies and offshore products crosslisted also on overseas exchanges. Assets in ETFs listed on TWSE totaled NT$144.6 billion (US$4.84 billion)at the end of July, 2012.
