Taipei, July 19 (CNA) Taiwan's baseball team defeated South Korea 8-4 to win the Pony Bronco League Asia Pacific Tournament held in China's Nanjing City on Thursday.

Both Taiwan and South Korea had won four straight wins before the finals of the July 15-19 tournament for children between ages 11-12.

The Taiwan team won by clinching five straight wins at the tournament, and will be representing Asia at the upcoming Bronco League World Series, scheduled to kick off August 1 in Monterey, California in the United States.

Only five countries attended the Asia Pacific tournament this year -- Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines and China. Indonesia had dropped out at the last minute.

Taiwan beat the Philippines in the first round of the tournament 15-0, and Japan 12-2 in the second round.

Taiwan clinched its third victory against Hong Kong with a score of 25-0 and in the last game against China 10-0.

Taiwan's team consisted mostly of Taitung County's Xinsheng Elementary School baseball team members.

The team also recruited members from other schools, including Hongye Elementary School, Taiyuan Elementary School and Wulin Elementary School.

The team will be returning to Taiwan on July 24 for intensive training, before defending its World Series title in August, said the Taitung County government's Education Department.
