Taiwan U12 baseball team aiming to retain title at Asia championships

Taipei, July 6 (CNA) Taiwan's under-12 baseball team is hoping to clinch its sixth win at the Asia championships in China next month, the coach said Thursday.

"Defending the title should not be a problem, as long as the children fully exploit their talents on the baseball field," said the team coach Lai Min-nan.

However, he said, the team is being careful not to underestimate its opponents and will be in intensive training in July in preparation for the annual Baseball Federation of Asia 12U Championship, which will be held Aug. 16-23 in Chengdu.

Most of the players on the Taiwan team are from Dong Yuan Elementary School in Taipei, while a few are from Taipei Municipal Shezi Elementary School and Fu Lin Elementary School.

Because the players are from different parts of Taiwan, they need to learn to work together as a team during the one-month training in July, said Tai Pei-feng a batter from Taichung City who set a 100 percent average during the trials.

The players were selected from the 2012 Herbalife Cup that was held in June.

The Taiwan team will travel to Sichuan Province, China on Aug. 16 for the championships.
