Taipei, May 4 (CNA) Taiwan's National Palace Museum has won two gold medals at the American Association of Museums' MUSE awards, being the only Asian museum to win a prize and the only museum to seize two top honors in this year's competition.
The internationally renowned museum came top in the category of interpretive interactive installations with an audio-visual interpretation of a 660-year-old Chinese painting and won the category of multimedia installations with an animated version of an ancient Chinese hand scroll.
The interpretation of Huang Gongwang's 1350 painting "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountain" and related historical documents involves animation, touch screens, music, light and shadow and magical theater technologies to draw the viewers in, the museum said Thursday.
As part of the exhibition, 42 projectors were used to project a 3D version of the painting on a 40-meter-long screen, allowing the painting to be shown in its entirety.
Meanwhile, the animated version of the famous hand scroll "Along the River During the Ching-ming Festival," which comes from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), is shown on an 8-meter-long screen.
This allows viewers to see interactions between characters and the activities going on in Bianjing, the capital of China at the time, which brings to life the customs, people and magnificent temples and palaces in the paintings, it said.
The museum said it has been digitalizing its precious cultural assets in recent years and winning the MUSE awards shows that such efforts have attracted international attention.
The MUSE awards, now in their 23rd year, recognize outstanding achievement in museum media. The awards are organized by the Media and Technology Standing Professional Committee of the American Association of Museums.
Entries this year included projects such as videos, mobile games, multi-touch kiosks, online communities, interactive websites, audio tours and immersive exhibit installations, said the committee.
It said it received applications from museums in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia and the winning entries were evaluated according to factors including content, interface, design, innovation and appeal. Competitions were held in 13 categories.
