Taipei, May 30 (CNA) As the strength of northeasterly winds weakens, weather in northern Taiwan is forecast to remain stable and temperatures are expected to recover and hit 30 degrees Celsius Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Despite thick cloud cover, daytime temperatures are expected to rise 4-5 degrees from a day earlier to 29-30 degrees in the north, with little rainfall, while highs are expected to rise 1-2 degrees to 31 degrees in central Taiwan, the CWB said.

In the east, the mercury is expected to rise to 28-29 degrees Thursday, up from around 27 degrees a day earlier, the CWB said.

The bureau said a weather front that brought heavy rain around Taiwan earlier this week was now in the Bashi Channel, south of the country, which could continue to create unstable weather in southern and eastern Taiwan.

People in the south and east can expect sporadic showers Thursday, while thundershowers are possible in mountainous areas, particularly in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said the air quality was good in Yilan, Hualien and Taitung Thursday.

Fair air quality was recorded in some parts of northern and central Taiwan, in the Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas in the south, and the outlying Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu islands, according to the EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI).
