Northern Taiwan to remain cool as weather front moves away

Taipei, May 29 (CNA) Northern Taiwan will remain cool Wednesday under the influence of northeasterly winds, as a weather front that dumped heavy rain around Taiwan on Tuesday moves away, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said the weather front has moved to the Bashi Channel south of Taiwan, meaning that weather conditions Wednesday should be more stable, with temperatures in northern Taiwan expected to hit highs of 26 degrees Celsius, the same as on Tuesday.

Daytime highs in central and southern Taiwan should hit around 30 degrees, also little changed from a day earlier, the CWB said.

Despite the effects of the weather front fading, brief thundershowers are still possible in mountainous areas in central and southern Taiwan, in particular in the afternoon, the CWB said.

But weather conditions should further stabilize Thursday, pushing temperatures higher, the bureau forecast.

Because of the arrival of northeasterly winds Wednesday, strong winds were forecast for areas in the northern half of Taiwan, eastern Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula in the south, and the Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu islands, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said the air quality was good in northern Taiwan, Yilan, Hualien and Taitung on Wednesday.

Fair air quality was seen in some parts of central Taiwan, in the Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas in the south, and the Kinmen and Matsu islands, according to the EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI).
