Magnitude 4.5 earthquake shakes eastern Taiwan

Taipei, March 16 (CNA) An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale shook eastern Taiwan at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The epicenter of the temblor was about 56.9 kilometers north northeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 19.4 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung County, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 3 in the eastern county of Hualien, and 2 in the central county of Nantou and southern city of Kaohsiung, the bureau said.
