Taipei, Oct. 12 (CNA) Taiwanese short film "Stairway" by actor-turned-director Matt Wu won the best Asian short film award at the 19th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea on Saturday, making Wu the first Taiwanese to win the award.

The 30-minute film, Wu's directorial debut, and South Korean director Choi Kiyun's "The Night" shared the Sonje Award, which is granted to the best Korean and Asian short films.

Wu, who has appeared in numerous Taiwanese TV dramas and films, thanked his late grandmother, who inspired the film, in his acceptance speech.

He also thanked his actress girlfriend Yang Zishan, for her love and support, and for encouraging him to write the script for the film.

"Stairway" is inspired by Wu's own story and relationship with his grandmother. The film tells the story of a boy who helps his grandmother train so that she can climb the long stairway to reach his grandfather's grave on the annual Tomb Sweeping Day.

The winners of the Sonje Award each receive prize money of 10 million Korean won (US$9,310).
