Taipei, May 18 (CNA) Taiwan-based smartscooter maker Gogoro Inc. announced on Thursday its upcoming debut in France, with 600 scooters set to hit the streets of Paris this summer.

According to the company, Gogoro scooters will be part of the Coup eScooter Sharing Service, which will be available in select central Paris districts.

Coup, a subsidiary of Bosch, first launched the scooter sharing service in Berlin with 200 Gogoro electric scooters in 2016, and expanded to 1,000 scooters in March this year. Together with the Taiwan-based firm, they will compete with local firm Cityscoot service, which launched in Paris last summer with 150 electric scooters.

"Paris is one of the most congested cities in Europe with urban transport plagued by traffic problems, but it is also one of the top scooter cities in the world," Gogoro said on its official blog.

The service will be available to anyone with a Class B driver's license or an international driver's license and of legal age, it added.

Using a dedicated software app, customers will be able to locate the nearest Gogoro smartscooter with ease and the service will be available in July for Apple's iOS and Android systems.

Gogoro, founded by former executives of smartphone maker HTC Corp. (宏達電), had expressed the hope of expanding its business footprint in Europe following its successful launch in Taiwan in 2015.
