Taipei, March 19 (CNA) The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced Tuesday that Taiwan's next presidential and legislative elections will be held concurrently on Jan. 11, 2020.

The decision was made in a meeting of commission members.

Elections for the president, vice president and legislators have been held together in January 2012 and January 2016 in the two previous election cycles.

There had been some discussion of holding the votes separately, because of the difference in terms of the president and lawmakers.

The new Legislature takes office in early February while the new president is not inaugurated until May 20, over four months after being elected.

The last time the votes were held separately in 2008, national legislative elections were held on Jan. 12 and the presidential vote was held on March 22.

Holding two national elections within a few months of each other was criticized, however, as wasting resources, and the two were held together in 2012.
