President welcomes Marshall Islands president, pledges aid
2010/06/30 16:58:47
Taipei, June 30 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou met Wednesday at the Presidential Office with Marshall Islands President Jurelang Zedkaia following an official welcoming ceremony with full military honors at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.

During his meeting with Zedkaia, who was making his first official state visit to Taiwan, Ma announced that Taiwan will donate 1,000 pairs of sunglasses to the Marshall Islands to help reduce the prevalence of cataracts in the Pacific island country.

Ma said the Republic of China and the Marshall Islands have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 12 years and maintain close cooperation in the areas of agriculture, fishery, education, culture, health, information and infrastructure projects, as well as vocational training.

Recalling his last visit to the Marshall Islands in March, Ma said that after noticing the high number of cataract sufferers due to the strong sunshine there, he decided that the government would donate the sunglasses to augment the earlier establishment of a medical mission there to help reduce cataracts and strengthen public health cooperation between the two countries.

The government is also planning to organize an on-board observer training program to enable certified Marshall Islands trainees to work aboard Taiwanese fishing vessels, according to Ma.

The president also said that a number of students from National Dong Hwa University will travel to the Marshall Islands in July to teach local citizens in the fields of culture, the arts and physical education under a youth ambassador program organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He said that Taiwan plays an important role in the Asia-Pacific region and that the government will continue to promote flexible diplomacy, strengthen contact with its diplomatic allies and provide them with aid.

The president also expressed hope that the Marshall Islands will help Taiwan to participate in activities organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the International Civil Aviation Organization. (By Garfie Li and Y.L. Kao) ENDITEM/J
