President wants heritage status for traditional Chinese characters
2010/04/16 15:50:52 |
Taipei, April 16 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou expressed hope Friday that traditional Chinese characters can be designated as a world cultural heritage item by the United Nations.
Ma also instructed government agencies to use traditional, also known as standard, Chinese characters, instead of the simplified form of characters used in China, when receiving visitors from there, so as to promote the use of the traditional writing form.
The president made the remarks when addressing the opening of a cross-Taiwan Strait conference on Chinese literature held in Taipei. Other participants included National Cultural Association (NCA) President Liu Chao-shiuan, the 2000 Nobel laureate in literature Gao Xingjian, poet Ya Hsien, and writers Lee Ou-fan and Liu Zaifu.
According to Liu Chao-shiuan, literature could be the only available resolution to cross-strait differences because the two sides share a common cultural and historical memory.
In light of the situation in which there are terms that carry different meanings in China and Taiwan, the NCA is seeking to compile a database of Chinese terms in cooperation with China to expedite cross-strait cultural exchanges, he said.
Commenting on the issue, Gao, however, said it is not necessary to standardize the terms used by the two sides because "literature knows no borders." (By Cheng Ching-wen and Y.F. Low) ENDITEM/J
