Taiwan railway launches luxury 7-day tour of Taiwan

Taipei, April 9 (CNA) The Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) and a leading online travel agency unveiled on Friday a number of new train tour packages they have put together to explore Taiwan, including a seven-day luxury tour of the island that will cost NT$70,000 (US$2,215).
The seven-day package will take travelers to Taroko Gorge in Hualien, the Bunun aboriginal community in Taitung, Taiwan's ancient capital of Tainan, Kenting in southern Taiwan, and Sun Moon Lake and will put them up at six five-star hotels along the way.
Special attendants will be on board the train to provide assistance to passengers and serve them local delicacies, such as Donghe meat buns from Taitung, "Chou's" shrimp rolls from Tainan, and steamed red bean cake favored by the late first lady Soong Mei-ling, according to Jack Yo, president of travel agency ezTravel.
With airfares to overseas destinations on the rise, Yo said many people are choosing to travel around Taiwan, with a growing number opting for the tourism train.
The TRA launched the tourism train with ezTravel in 2001, initially targeting only eastern and southern Taiwan. But it later evolved into more varied offerings that connect all parts of the island.
At present, the cheapest "Formosa Star" tour is a one-day tour of Taroko Gorge, costing NT$1,999.
Most of the tour packages span two or three days, with prices ranging from NT$2,500 to NT$12,500.
More information on the packages offered can be found in Chinese on ezTravel's Web site. (By Wang Shu-feng and Lilian Wu) enditem/ls
