Nantou ideal for watching buzzard migration
2010/03/20 17:04:12 |
Taipei, March 20 (CNA) The season to watch gray-faced buzzard eagles migrate north is under way, and Nantou City's Hengshan and Hou Tan Jing leisure areas in central Taiwan are the best spots to observe the bird, local forest rangers said Saturday.
Around Spring Equinox, the birds pass the Bagua Mountains on the border of Changhua County and Nantou County en route to breeding grounds in Siberia after spending winter in the warm southeastern Asian region, according to the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area Administration.
Rising air currents in the mountainous area are ideal for the predator's aerial habit -- hovering. These conditions have helped make the Bagua Mountains the eagle's transit spot, rangers at the administration said.
Some seasons see more than 20,000 gray-faced buzzards flying over the mountains, they added.
Gray-faced buzzard eagles, also known as the "National Day Bird" in Taiwan, are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) , which includes species for which trade must be controlled to "avoid utilization incompatible with their survival."
The species may be the most famous of the 200 birds that transit through Taiwan every year as they migrate, and it earned its nickname because its winter migration period usually comes around Oct. 10, Taiwan's National Day.
The national scenic area administration and Nantou City Hall have jointly organized a seven-day eagle-observation event in Hengshan from March 22-28, inviting people to appreciate the beauty of the traveling predators. (By Lin Heng-li and Elizabeth Hsu) ENDITEM/bc
