2010/03/16 15:27:12
Taipei, March 16 (CNA) An international symposium that will create a dialogue between Jewish and Chinese traditions will be held at Academia Sinica's Institute of Literature and Philosophy from March 22-23.

Taiwanese and Israeli scholars from the fields of philosophy, literature and history will participate in the conference, according to a statement released by the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei (ISECO).

Two prominent Israeli sinologists, Yoav Ariel and Zhang Ping, will participate in the forum, which is being jointly sponsored by the ISECO and Academia Sinica's Institute of Literature and Philosophy.

Ariel, one of the founders of Tel Aviv University's Department of East Asian Studies, is a prominent scholar in the fields of western and eastern philosophies. He also serves as the university's Dean of Students.

Zhang, a faculty member in the East Asian Studies department and an expert on Jewish thought, published the first Chinese translation the "Pirkei Avot, " a classic compilation of ethical teachings from leading rabbinic scholars published nearly 1,800 years ago.

The symposium will include additional lectures on aspects related to the Jewish-Chinese dialogue presented by Liu Shu-Hsien, Fang Chi- Jung, Tsai Yen-jen and many others.
