2010/03/12 21:33:23 |
Taipei, March 12 (CNA) Taiwan added 9,853 naturalized citizens in 2009, of which more than three-quarters came from Vietnam, the Ministry of the Interior announced Friday.
The ministry reported that 98.09 percent of these new citizens were female, 98.62 percent were from Southeast Asia, and 97.2 percent of them got their Republic of China passports through marriage.
A breakdown of the origins of the newly naturalized shows that 76.7 percent came from Vietnam, 11 percent were from Indonesia, and 3.3 percent were from the Philippines.
Meanwhile, 844 Republic of China passport holders -- 513 women and 331 men -- gave up their citizenship in 2009. While 74.17 percent gave up their ROC citizenship voluntarily to become citizens of other countries, 16.35 percent lost their citizenship because they got married to a foreign national.
Of the total, 390 gave up their ROC citizenship for Japanese passports, 178 became Korean citizens, and 122 became citizens of Singapore. (By Hsieh Chia-chen and Lillian Lin) enditem/ls
