MAC hopes China will support Taiwan's FTA talks with other nations
2010/02/01 13:24:01 |
Taipei, Feb. 1 (CNA) Taiwan's economy will gradually shrink if Taiwan cannot sign free trade agreements (FTAs) with other countries, a Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) official said Sunday.
"Therefore, it is hoped that China will be pleased to see Taiwan signing FTAs with its major trade partners, " MAC Deputy Chairman Kao Charng said in a radio interview.
Moreover, Kao went on, signing FTAs with major trade partners under the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework is not a political issue.
"We hope China can understand that it is very important for Taiwan to further develop trade and economic ties with other countries," Kao added.
He further said it is difficult to believe the speculations that China will intervene in any efforts by Taiwan to sign FTAs with other countries.
If China imposes any economic sanctions -- such as stopping imports of raw materials or semi-finished products from Taiwan -- for political or non-economic purposes, it would also impact negatively on China's economy, Kao said.
Taiwan-China trade relations can be developed parallel to Taiwan-U.S. trade relations, he suggested.
The long-term development of Taiwan-U.S. trade relations will be determined mainly by market factors and will not be affected by the U.S. beef issue, Kao added.
