New bridge inaugurated on Alishan Highway
2010/07/31 19:31:26
Taipei, July 31 (CNA) A new Wuhuliao Bridge on the Alishan Highway was inaugurated Saturday following a two-year reconstruction project.

Minister of Transportation and Communications Mao Chi-kuo, Chiayi Magistrate Chang Hwa-kuan and various other local officials attended the opening ceremony.

The old Wuhuliao Bridge, which collapsed after Typhoon Sinlaku hit the Chiayi area in September 2008, was rebuilt some 300 meters downstream from its original spot.

The new bridge, the reconstruction of which cost NT$468 million (US$14.64 million) , is 490 meters long and 19 meters wide. It connects the townships of Chungpu and Fanlu on either side of the Pachang River, which form a key segment of the route to the Alishan Forest Recreation Area.

The mountainous area is often damaged by downpours, especially during typhoon season.

Alishan Mountain is one of the top tourist destinations in Taiwan among Chinese tourists. (By K.F. Huang and Flor Wang) ENDITEM/J
