Apple Daily: Prosecutors should probe FPG fire
2010/07/30 10:57:55
The recent fire at the Formosa Plastics Group's (FPG's) No. 6 naphtha cracker complex in Mailiao, Yunlin County is not a normal industrial accident. It is an environmental disaster that has led to widespread air pollution and has caused huge losses to the local agricultural and fishery industries.

The importance of this case has been overlooked. The Department of Health should investigate if there are more cancer sufferers in Mailiao than in other areas and if there is any connection between cancer case numbers and the petrochemical operations there.

In Taiwan, people always expect government intervention in everything, such as urging the Executive Yuan to set up an independent investigation committee. Why don't Mailiao residents simply hire lawyers to sue FPG?

Prosecutors should have taken the initiative to investigate the case long ago. What are they waiting for? (Editorial abstract -- July 30, 2010) (By Y.F. Low) ENDITEM/J
