Taiwan wins world junior nankyu baseball championships
2010/07/29 22:21:16
Tokyo, July 29 (CNA) A game-winning hit in the extra 10th inning led Chinese Taipei to edge out Japan's second team 7-6 to bag the title of the Sixth World Junior Nankyu Baseball Championships held in Chiba, Japan.

The Chinese Taipei team, comprised of payers from the Xiyuan Junior High School in Taichung City, had recorded four consecutive wins before defeating Japan's first team 4-2 in the semi-final earlier in the day to qualify for the final.

In the final, played in heavy downpours, Taiwan and Japan had tied at five runs each at the end of the ninth inning, forcing the game into an additional 10th inning that started with all bases loaded.

Japan scored one run first, only to be overturned by Taiwan with one game-clinching hit for this year's title.

Nankyu is a Japanese term for the rubber ball, which is usually used by teenage players as it is safer than the standard hard leather baseball.
