National education conference slated for Aug. 28-29
2010/07/29 15:58:31
Taipei, July 29 (CNA) A national education conference is slated to be held Aug. 28-29, mainly to map out a blueprint for Taiwan's overall education policy for the next decade, Premier Wu Den-yih said Thursday.

The government will solicit opinions and suggestions to be mooted during the conference in the hope that the gathering will help institute the momentum and lay out the direction for the country's education development in the years to come, Wu said.

A white paper on education will be drafted by the Ministry of Education after the conference to serve as a blueprint for the nation's education policy, he said.

The national education conference, the eighth of its kind, will tackle a number of issues, including new educational systems, education for all, enrollment systems and 12-year compulsory education, the functions of higher education and its development, multicultural education and care for the under-privileged, lecturers' professional development, the nurturing of knowledge-based economics talent, international and cross-Taiwan Strait cooperation in education, as well as life-long learning, according to the Ministry of Education.

Participants at the conference will include education officials, legislators, Control Yuan members, leaders from the business and industrial sectors, civic groups, academics and students, as well as representatives from parental organizations, according to the ministry.
