Taipei, June 29 (CNA) Discussions on the prevention of enterovirus and other epidemic outbreaks are expected to be included in the next round of high-level talks between Taiwan and China, a Department of Health (DOH) official said Tuesday.
Chang Feng-yee, director-general of the DOH's Centers for Disease Control, made the remarks after learning that the next round of talks will include medical cooperation and investment protection.
The two sides wrapped up a fifth round of talks in Chongqing, China on Tuesday. At the talks, Taiwan and China inked a landmark economic cooperation framework agreement.
Chang said that although the details are not yet known, both sides are expected to talk about cooperation in the control and preventing of enterovirus and other epidemic outbreaks.
"In principle, both sides will embark on the monitoring of enterovirus outbreak, clinical diagnosis, and vaccine experiment," he added.
The two sides signed an agreement on food safety during the second round of cross-strait talks, according to Kang Jaw-jou, director-general of the DOH's Food and Drug Administration.
The next round of cross-strait talks could include discussions on strengthening the food safety agreement, but the two sides will not sign any pact related to food safety, Kang added.
Millions of people around the world are affected by enterovirus each year. The virus is often found in the respiratory secretions, such as saliva, sputum, or nasal mucus, and stool of an infected person.
Infection can result in a wide variety of symptoms ranging from the common cold, hand, foot and mouth disease, as well as more serious conditions, such as paralysis. (By Chen Ching-fang and Lilian Wu) enditem/cs
