Taiwanese people urged to exercise more in new year

Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) The Ministry of Education on Tuesday encouraged adults in the country to make a New Year's resolution to exercise more, learn more and be compassionate toward others.
Education Minister Wu Ching-chi urged the Taiwanese public to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, to engage themselves in learning for at least 30 minutes a day, and to be involved in a good deed each day.
Coining his campaign as a "331" movement, Wu quoted a 2009 survey conducted by the Cabinet-level Sports Affairs Council as finding that only 24.4 percent of Taiwanese adults exercise regularly, compared to Japan's 33.3 percent for men and 27.5 percent for women.
"There still is ample room for us to improve in terms of regular physical exercise," he said.
The education minister also quoted another poll conducted in 2008 on adult learning as indicating that only 31 percent of people aged between 16-64 in the Taiwan, Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu areas engaged in learning activities for four hours or more per week.
The figure was lower to the 42 percent in Germany in 2006, Wu said.
Meanwhile, Vice Education Minister Lin Tsung-ming called for the Taiwanese public to eat a vegetarian diet for at least one day a week in an effort to "save Taiwan and the world." He pointed out that some 36 kilograms of carbon dioxide are emitted from the production of each kilogram of beef.
Lin said global warming has continued to worsen and Taiwan has been rated as the seventh most endangered area in the world.
