Proposed cross-strait task force not redundant: DPP lawmaker

Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) renewed its bid Tuesday to create a task force to strengthen the legislature's supervision of a proposed trade pact slated to be signed between Taiwan and China later this year.
DPP caucus whip Lee Chun-yee said the proposed legislative task force aimed at overseeing affairs involving Taiwan and China will not overlap with the legislature's existing committees.
"Overlapping is not a problem as the functions of the current committees are inadequate, " he said at a press conference at the legislature.
He also argued that the legislature has already set up many special task forces designed to deal with various issues.
"Without the task force, it will be difficult for the legislature to oversee the ECFA, " Lee noted, referring to the proposed economic cooperation framework agreement between Taiwan and China.
President Ma Ying-jeou believes, however, that it necessary to figure out first if the body would be redundant, Presidential Office spokesman Wang Yu-chi said Monday. But Wang added that the Ma government agrees on the need for legislative supervision.
Lee also urged the government Tuesday to allow people to initiate a referendum on the trade pact as it will have an immense impact on conventional industries and the agricultural sector.
"If the trade pact is a solution to Taiwan's future economy as Ma and Wu (Premier Wu Den-yih) say, why do they fear the referendum?" he said.
Lee's remarks came hours before Ma holds a press conference to brief the public on progress in trade pact talks at the Presidential Office. (By Alex Jiang) ENDITEM/ls
