Subsidies for producers shooting films in Taiwan to rise: GIO

Taipei, Feb. 8 (CNA) Taiwan will increase its subsidies for foreign movie producers who film all or part of their pictures in the country, according to newly revised regulations announced by the Government Information Office (GIO) Monday.
Foreign producers can apply for the subsidies to the GIO before coming to Taiwan to make their movies.
The newly revised regulations will raise personnel subsidies to 30 percent of the cost of hiring Taiwanese actors and production staff, from the original 20 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
Foreign producers will also be eligible to have 25 percent of their production expenses and 15 percent of their transportation, accommodation and insurance expenses in Taiwan subsidized, up from the original 15 percent and 5 percent respectively.
But producers whose films have won best picture awards in the competition category at four major film festivals -- Cannes, Venice, Berlin and the Oscars -- or productions co-produced by directors who have won a best director award at the festivals, will be granted more generous subsidies because their films will go further in raising Taiwan's international image.
GIO Minister Su Jun-pin expressed the hope that the newly revised regulations will help lure more foreign film makers to Taiwan to shoot their productions.
"This will help promote exchanges of cross-border movie production technology as well as promote Taiwan's culture and distinctive scenery to the world through the airing of these films, " Su said. (By Angela Tsai and Lilian Wu) enditem/ls
