Taipei Feb. 8 (CNA) An exhibition exploring the histories of the English city of Liverpool and southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung opened Monday at the Former British Consulate Residence in Kaohsiung.
According to Christine Skinner, director of the British Council, the consulate was built in 1879 and was the first building to be built in Taiwan under the sponsorship of the British government, as well as the origin of cultural exchanges between Britain and Taiwan.
The exhibition, titled "Urban revival: The story of Liverpool, songs from the Beatles and re-imagining Kaohsiung, " explores the theme of urban regeneration and the creative industries in the two port cities, Skinner said.
Utilizing modern retro-imagery and vinyl aesthetics, and with original tunes from the Beatles, Skinner said the exhibition will show Liverpool's revitalization, which she said has a great deal of similarity to Kaohsiung.
According to an organizer from the British Council, the history of Liverpool can be traced back more than 800 years. It was once an important port city and visitors can now see the legacy of different eras in its development such as the docks, transport facilities, factories and business buildings from the Age of Discovery.
In 2004, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee listed Liverpool as a World Heritage Site under the name: "Liverpool -- Maritime Mercantile City."
Using Liverpool as an example, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of the Kaohsiung city government hopes to provide its citizens with an archetype of urban development.
The exhibition will run through the end of July. (By Sunnie Chen) ENDITEM/J
