Flower season opens in southern Taiwan township
2010/02/07 21:28:53
Kaohsiung, Feb. 7 (CNA) An annual floral season in Meinung township in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung County opened Sunday, drawing large crowds of holidaymakers to the blossom-drenched area.

Kaohsiung Magistrate Yang Chiu-hsing said he took the initiative six years ago to encourage farmers in Meinung to plant cosmos and other flowers on their land during the winter when their farms were lying fallow, in order to create a draw for visitors.

"Today, the event has blossomed into a new tourist attraction, bringing additional income to local residents, " Yang said, adding that 60 hectares of farm land in Meinung township have planted cosmos and other flowers this eyar.

Although several other Taiwan townships have followed suit, Meinung, a Hakka stronghold, is the only place where cosmos blooms around the Lunar New Year festival, Yang said.

Last year, more than 200,000 people visited Meinung during the floral season, generating lucrative business opportunities for traditional Hakka-style eateries in the township, Yang said.

This year's floral season will run until March 10, Yang said, adding that neighboring Chishan township now also boasts many floral farms with colorful cosmos and other blossoms.

A national acrobatics troupe Mongolia has been invited to perform during the Feb. 14-21 Lunar New Year holiday and many other cultural and entertainment programs will also be staged during the period. (By Chen Shou-kuo and Sofia Wu) ENDITEM/J
