Tycoon donates NT$600 million to charity
2010/02/07 17:29:40
Taipei, Feb. 7 (CNA) Hon Hai Group Chairman Terry Gou said Sunday at a charity carnival that it was his happiest day since the financial crisis erupted as he made a donation of NT$300 million (US$9.38 million) to several social welfare organizations.

At the event held by the Yong Lin Charity Foundation -- which he founded -- the business tycoon also donated another NT$300 million to expand elementary schools for children in remote areas and poor families.

Guo said that he had been gloomy since Taiwan was hit by the global financial crisis and Typhoon Morakot last year. However, he said he finally felt happy again after seeing so many people turn out for the carnival.

He said the carnival was aimed at raising funds ahead of the Chinese New Year for various social groups in view of an imbalanced distribution of social resources following the channeling of most donations into Morakot-affected areas, resulting in insufficient financial support for many social welfare groups.

The event gathered together a large number of entertainers and celebrities, as well as some 1,000 Hon Hai employees. (By Pan Su-tien and Y.L. Kao) ENDITEM/J
